Schengen Visa for Parents and Senior Citizens From India: Documents, Sponsorship and Insurance

Retired parents follow the same short-stay rules as everyone else, with pension statements in place of pay slips. Here is the document list, how sponsorship by a child works, what a host abroad must send, and where senior files usually fall short.

Can my parents get a Schengen visa from India?

Yes. Retired and senior applicants follow the same short-stay rules: EUR 90 fee per traveller, EUR 30,000 travel medical insurance, and a decision within 15 calendar days of submission. The list for India asks a retired applicant for pension statements for the last three months and/or proof of regular income from property or business, plus the standard documents.

There is no separate "senior citizen" visa, no age limit, and no age-based fee waiver. What changes is how the file proves two things every applicant must prove: money for the trip and reasons to come back. For a working applicant those come from an employer. For a retired parent they come from pensions, assets and family, and the list for India is written to accept exactly that.

What documents does a retired parent need?

Every applicant in India submits the core list adopted by the European Commission on 4 July 2025; a retired applicant adds pension or income proof. If a child abroad or in India is paying, the sponsorship documents come on top. If the parent is visiting a child in Europe, the host's invitation and proof of residence come on top.

Group Documents (list for India, Decision C(2025) 4379)
Everyone Cover letter (purpose, duration, companions, transport, accommodation); proof of transport and itinerary; accommodation for every country on the route; original bank statement for the last three months, stamped and signed by the bank; income tax return acknowledgments for the last two assessment years; copies of the passport's biodata page, last page and earlier Schengen stamps
Retired Pension statements for the last three months and/or proof of regular income from ownership of property or business
Sponsored Proof of sponsorship and/or private accommodation using the national form of the member state concerned, where that state has one
Visiting family Invitation from the family member with their address, contact details and the intended period of stay; copy of the host's passport, national ID card or residence permit

Plus, for all: travel medical insurance of at least EUR 30,000 valid across the Schengen area for the whole stay, and a photo to the visa office's specification. The document checklist covers each item in detail.

How does sponsorship by a son or daughter work?

The list for India says a sponsored applicant proves it with the national form of the member state concerned, if that state has one; the visa office's website says which. The form is completed by the sponsor, usually with their own income proof attached as the form instructs. The parent's cover letter then names the sponsor and the form.

Points that decide whether the sponsorship holds up:

  • Use the form the country asks for. A plain letter from a child saying "I will pay" does not replace a national form where one exists. Check the page of the visa office handling the file.
  • The parent still submits their own statements. The three-month bank statement and two years of income tax return acknowledgments are on the list for every applicant. A parent with a small pension and a sponsor is a normal file; a parent with no statement at all is a gap.
  • The sponsor's documents follow the form's instructions, not a generic checklist. Read the form.
  • Say it once, consistently. Cover letter, form and bank statements must tell the same story about who pays for what. The cover letter guide has the paragraph.

What should the invitation from a child living in Europe say?

The list for India is specific: an invitation from the family member including their address, contact details and the intended period of stay, plus evidence of the host's legal residence, meaning a copy of their passport, national ID card or residence permit. Add a document showing the relationship so the officer can connect the host to the applicant.

If the child is also hosting, the invitation doubles as the accommodation proof for that country. If the parents will also travel to a second Schengen country, they need accommodation proof for that country too; the list requires it for every member state on the route.

Which country do parents apply to?

The country of the main destination, measured by length or purpose of stay, and the country of first entry if no main destination can be determined. Parents visiting a child in Germany for three weeks with a four-day trip to Paris apply to Germany. The visa office is not a choice, and applying elsewhere gets the file returned.

Two family-specific traps:

  • Parents in a different city from you. They apply at the centre serving where they live. Spain's centre, for example, requires six months' residence in the jurisdiction.
  • Parents and children applying separately. Each traveller's file is assessed on its own. A sponsor's strong file does not carry a parent's incomplete one.

Work out the visa office with the which-country tool.

What about insurance and biometrics for seniors?

Insurance is the same EUR 30,000 minimum for every age, covering emergency treatment, hospitalisation and repatriation across the Schengen area for the whole stay. Premiums depend on age, so buy early and check the certificate, not the price. Biometrics are in person for everyone; the only exemption is where fingerprinting is physically impossible.

If fingerprints cannot be taken for a temporary reason, the visa office can ask for them at the next application. The insurance guide lists the lines the certificate must carry.

Where senior files usually fall short

  • Ties are assumed, not shown. "Retired, will obviously return" is not a document. Pension statements, property papers and the return flight are.
  • Funds sit in the wrong account. A fixed deposit in a spouse's name is not the applicant's three-month statement. Move the trip money in time for it to show as ordinary balance.
  • A large deposit the week before. The statement shows movements for three months; a sudden lump sum invites questions the cover letter must answer.
  • Insurance bought by the child abroad in the wrong format. The certificate must name the traveller and state EUR 30,000 and the Schengen territory.
  • Accommodation covers the host's city only. Every country on the route needs proof.

Each of these maps to a ground on the standard refusal form, and the fee, EUR 90 per traveller, is not returned. The refusal reasons guide explains the grounds; the bank balance tool shows the reference amount the destination publishes per day.

Before the appointment

Parents' files are usually assembled by someone else, in a hurry, from a mix of Indian and European documents. A free readiness check goes through the India list per traveller and shows what is still missing; the group option handles both parents under one payment.
