Indians filed 1,153,748 Schengen visa applications in 2025 and 181,111 came back refused. That is a non-issuance rate of 15.8%, slightly above the global average of 14.8%. The €90 fee is not returned, and in 2024 alone rejected applications from India burned roughly ₹1.36 billion in fees.
Almost none of those refusals were about the applicant being untrustworthy. They were about paperwork that left a gap an officer had to close, and the fastest way to close a gap is to refuse.
Consulates pick from a fixed list
A refusal letter is not written from scratch. The officer ticks a box from a standard list set out in Annex VI of the Visa Code. Knowing the list tells you what your file is actually being graded against.

The four that dominate applications from India
Insurance that does not qualify. The Visa Code requires at least €30,000 of cover, valid across all Schengen states, including repatriation and emergency treatment. Domestic Indian health policies do not qualify. Most credit card cover does not qualify either. Read the certificate, not the brochure.
A balance that arrives too late. A large deposit landing days before you apply reads as borrowed money parked to clear a threshold. It is not illegal and it is refused constantly. If the money is genuine, document where it came from and say so in one line.
Nights nobody can account for. If your trip runs fourteen nights and your bookings cover eleven, the officer has three nights with no explanation. Cover every night with a booking or an invitation letter that includes the host's ID and address proof.
No evidence you are coming back. This is the ground behind a large share of refusals and it is the one applicants prepare least. A leave-approval letter on company letterhead, recent salary slips, and proof of property or a business are the standard answers.
Where you apply changes your odds
Refusal rates for Indian applicants ranged from 10.5% at Germany to 46.1% at Slovenia in 2025. Same rulebook, four times the risk. You do not get a free choice of consulate, but when your itinerary genuinely spans several countries, the rules can point at more than one, and the difference is worth knowing.
Before you book anything
Processing can legally take up to 45 days and regularly does during the Indian summer peak. Keep flights refundable until the visa is in your passport. Apply no earlier than six months out and no later than fifteen calendar days before travel.
